The Odds of Finding the Right Horse

“We looked at many. We present a few.”

Every buyer starts with the same picture in mind: the right horse, the right fit, the right timing. What few people see is how many horses fall away before that picture becomes real.

The truth nobody tells you about buying a horse? The odds are against you.

The Filter Nobody Sees

Clinical check before a Prīmī horse is selected

Before a horse ever reaches a buyer, it has to pass a long list:

✔️ X-rays that come back clean
✔️ A clinical exam without red flags
✔️ Rideability: clean lead changes, no swapping, no cross-cantering
✔️ A temperament that suits the rider, not too hot, not spooky
✔️ A real match with the rider’s level, goals and program

Online, a horse can look perfect. A well-edited video or a good result sheet rarely tells the whole story. That’s where the odds turn: for every horse that ticks all the boxes, many don’t.

What a Video Day Really Looks Like

We see this every time we prepare a sale. On our latest video day, several horses we were excited about didn’t pass the X-rays or the clinical exam.

It’s disappointing, but it’s exactly why the process exists. We’d rather say no on our side than let a client discover a problem later. Being strict is the whole job.

When Everything Is Done — and It Still Isn’t

Recently, clients flew over to Europe and we found them the perfect horse on the road. We went through every step and the vetting came back good. It felt done.

Then the blood results arrived: positive for piroplasmosis. A horse that tests positive cannot be exported to Canada or the United States. Just like that, the match was over.

It’s a feeling every buyer and every agent knows. You do all the work, you fall for a horse that truly deserves it, and something outside your control decides otherwise. It’s also why we test for it, and why we never stop at “it looks good.”

More Information, Better Choices

Is buying a horse harder today than it used to be? Hard to say. What has changed is the amount of information available: imaging, vetting, video, competition records.

Used well, it lets buyers make far better decisions. Used badly, it creates noise. Our role is to combine that information with experience in the saddle and on the ground.

Every Budget, Same Standards

Bonita - Primi Hunter & Jumper Horse Sale

There are good horses at every price point. Different budgets mean different priorities, and choosing which boxes matter most for your program.

But some things are never negotiable: the horse must be healthy, physically sound and mentally sound. Everything else is about the right match.

Europe, North America, Scout or Trainer

Whether you travel to Europe, work with a scout, rely on your trainer or buy at home in North America, the challenge is the same: filtering the many to find the one.

When a horse goes online with Prīmī, it’s a horse we scouted, checked and tested, with all our combined knowledge behind it. You can be sure it went through that filter, and that real effort sits behind it.

That’s why we’re proud of every horse we present. 🐎✨
